The cargo ship Khatulistiwa 8, laden with cement, collided with a barge in waters off Tuban last night. One crew member of the cargo vessel is currently reported missing.

Tuban police Aipda Joko Nurcahyo said the collision caused the cargo ship to lose power, or black out, before it sank, while one of the ship’s officers was reported missing amid the heavy waves.

“A total of 17 crew members were rescued and successfully evacuated, while one person is still missing, and a search is currently under way by the SAR team,” Joko said, as quoted by detikJatim on Thursday (8/10/2026).

According to Joko, the collision occurred at around 10.00 pm local time at coordinates 06 degrees 33 minutes 460 seconds S / 112 degrees 59 minutes 219 seconds E, roughly nine nautical miles from the private port of PT Semen Indonesia Tuban.

The 17 crew members were rescued using the tugboat TB Amazon Harbour and local fishing boats. All survivors were then brought back to the PT Semen Indonesia Tuban private port at around 1.30 am local time.

Meanwhile, the first mate (mualim I), Mayan Petter Saba, 29, was reported missing. The joint SAR team is still conducting the search.
