Cardinal Sin in hospital

MANILA (Reuter): The Philippines' top churchman, Cardinal
Jaime Sin, is in hospital for a "mild kidney malfunction" but is
not in danger, officials of the Catholic church said yesterday.

The Manila archbishop, who played a key role in ousting late
president Ferdinand Marcos during a "people power" revolt in
1986, has been treated at a Manila hospital since Sunday, they
said.

Father Aris Sison, minister for social communication of the
Manila archdiocese, denied a local newspaper report that Sin
needed a kidney transplant.

"The doctors said it's a minor condition very common among
people of his age. He is not in any danger," Sison said. Sin will
turn 68 next month.

"He is his usual jolly self and is in high spirits."
