The carbon trading scheme in the forestry sector, which for years had remained merely a discourse, is now beginning to be realised. Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated that the acceleration of its implementation was inseparable from the support of President Prabowo Subianto. “Of course, we express our appreciation and gratitude to President Prabowo, who once again has made something that seemed impossible possible, turning what was once just talk into something we can realise,” said Raja Juli Antoni at the launch of the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK) in Jakarta on Thursday. The implementation of carbon trading commenced after the Ministry of Forestry issued permits to four holders of Forest Utilisation Business Approvals (PBPH) to conduct carbon transactions. The four consist of three concession PBPHs and one social forestry scheme. Raja Juli Antoni emphasised that the Ministry of Forestry will continue to expand the implementation of carbon trading so that its benefits can be felt more widely, both by business actors and forest management communities. The policy is expected to strengthen forest protection while improving community welfare. “Including 8.3 million hectares of our social forestry areas will be able to enjoy this carbon trading process, including 1.4 million hectares of customary forests that we will also empower together,” said the Forestry Minister. The government officially launched the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK) today. The Ministry of Forestry became the first ministry to implement carbon trading by launching the Forestry Ministerial Approval on the issuance of carbon units through the Non-Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate (Non SPE-GRK) scheme on 6 July 2026. This step is part of the acceleration of green economic development promoted by the government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto.
