Car Tire Prices Update for March 2026: Replace Before Mudik
Jakarta, Kompas.com – Car tyres are often regarded as trivial, yet they play a vital role in safety and comfort. No matter how long the journey, tyre condition should be a primary concern as it directly affects vehicle stability, especially at high speeds or when carrying full loads. Fisa Rizqiano, Head of Original Equipment (OE) Sales at Bridgestone Indonesia, explains there are several fundamental points drivers should check before long trips to maintain safety and comfort.
First, air pressure must be checked. Tyre pressure should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and measurements should be taken with a standard, accurate gauge. In addition to pressure, drivers should check the Tire Wear Indicator (TWI). If the tread surface has worn down to the 1.6 mm tread wear indicator, the tyre is no longer fit for use. “If the tread has reached the 1.6 mm indicator, tyres must be replaced,” Fisa said.
Next, inspect the tyre’s physical condition comprehensively. Cracks, tears, or bulges on the sidewall signal a risk of structural failure, particularly on long trips with high operating temperatures. Equally important, ensure a spare tyre is ready. Fisa recommends the spare tyre pressure be set somewhat higher than the main tyre, around 5 psi, so it is ready for use in emergencies. “Ensure the spare tyre or tyre repair kit is ready to use, with the spare tyre pressure ideally about 5 psi higher,” he said.
Finally, he reminded the importance of regular toe alignment (spooring) and balancing, ideally every 8,000 to 10,000 kilometres or when the steering begins to vibrate or pull to one side. “Toe alignment and balancing help keep the vehicle’s movement stable, extend tyre life, and improve driving comfort,” Fisa said.
If the tyre condition no longer meets safety standards, replacement is the best step. It is recommended to replace a full set or all four tyres to ensure uniform wear and consistent performance, keeping the vehicle stable in different road conditions.
