Car stealing students busted

JAKARTA (JP): Police have arrested two university students believed to be members of an auto theft gang, an officer said on Friday.

Jakarta Police Criminal Investigation chief Sr. Supt. Harry Montolalu identified the two youths as Zefanya Yulius and M. Zaini.

The other member of the all university auto theft gang, Ikhsan, was still at large, he said.

The two suspects, he said, were busted while eating at a fast food restaurant on Jl. M.H. Thamrin in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

"We seized a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan and a Daihatsu Feroza jeep from the group," Harry told reporters.

The officer said that the students were able to steal the cars by using keys duplicated from the originals with the help of the hired drivers of the cars.

Harry also said that city police had confiscated 17 stolen cars since the first of this month.(jaw)
