Car Sales Surge: 80,776 Units Sold, This Brand Becomes King of the Roads
The national automotive market is beginning to show signs of recovery after slowing during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period. Data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) records wholesale sales, or distribution from factories to dealers, reaching 80,776 units throughout April 2026.
This figure rose 31.8% compared to March 2026. On an annual basis, the increase was more dramatic at around 55%. Meanwhile, on the retail sales side, or direct sales to consumers, the market also grew 13.7% to 75,730 units compared to the previous month’s 66,595 units.
The dominance of Japanese manufacturers remains unshaken. Toyota once again dominates the market with sales of 25,686 units in April, controlling nearly a third of the national automotive market with a 29.8% market share.
Daihatsu follows in second place with 13,399 units sold, or about 16.7% market share. Suzuki is in third with 7,160 units, followed by Mitsubishi Motors with 5,183 units.
However, market competition is starting to change. The presence of Chinese brands is increasingly felt in the national sales list. BYD has broken into the top five with 4,625 units sold, while Jaecoo has drawn attention with 3,219 units and directly entered the top 10 best-selling brands for April 2026.
This phenomenon indicates that the electric and hybrid vehicle market is gaining a larger place in Indonesia. In recent months, Chinese brands have aggressively offered new models with competitive prices and more modern technology.
In the commercial vehicle segment, Mitsubishi Fuso remains a strong player with 3,569 units sold. This is followed by Isuzu with 2,469 units and Hino with 1,752 units.
Meanwhile, Honda recorded sales of 2,363 units throughout April and has been pushed to the ninth position. Traditionally, Honda has usually been in the top five year after year.
Cumulatively, national car sales from January to April 2026 reached 289,787 units, up 12.5% from the same period last year at 257,647 units.
On the retail sales side, total sales for the first four months of this year reached 287,581 units, up 6.9% year-on-year.
