Car Plunges into Selokan Mataram Drain After Failed Maneuver
Social media has circulated a video of a car accident where a vehicle plunged into a drainage ditch near Selokan Mataram in Sleman earlier today. The driver failed to execute a proper maneuver while reversing. The Instagram account @merapi_uncover posted the video showing the car tilted to the right and stuck at the edge of the drain.
Sleman Police Department’s Public Relations Head, Iptu Argo Anggoro, confirmed the incident involved a Toyota Calya at 1:00 PM. The driver, identified as MRSP, aged 20, is from Salatiga City. Argo clarified that initial reports claiming the driver was a minor were incorrect.
He explained the vehicle was travelling east to west when the driver attempted to reverse back onto the asphalt road but instead veered into the northern ditch of Selokan Mataram. Police secured the scene and coordinated with Kalasan Police Station traffic duty officers for further handling. The driver refused police medical assistance.
No casualties were reported, and the driver sustained no injuries. The vehicle suffered damage to the front right bumper and right front door, with estimated material losses of Rp 2 million. Police advised road users to check vehicle conditions and surroundings before manoeuvring, especially when reversing or stopping roadside. ‘Prioritise safety by ensuring the surrounding area is secure to prevent traffic accidents,’ Argo added.
