Car Hits Roadside Barrier and Overturns in Kupang, Woman from Bandung Dies
A deadly accident occurred in Oesapa Barat Village, Kelapa Lima District, Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). A Honda Brio car with license plate number DD 1722 BN overturned after hitting a roadside barrier.
A woman from Bandung Regency, West Java, died in the single-vehicle accident which occurred at around 03:30 local time on Sunday (May 17, 2026). In addition to the fatality, the incident also resulted in five other people being injured.
“All the victims were passengers in the car. It was a single-vehicle accident,” said Head of Traffic Unit at Kupang City Police, AKP Ade Triken Deayomi, to detikBali on Sunday.
“The unfortunate incident resulted in one person dead and five others injured,” he added.
Triken said that the red car, driven by Fatmawati Syam (34), was initially traveling from the Kelapa Lima sub-district office towards Oesapa Kecil Elementary School. According to him, the car was traveling at high speed.
While passing through the location, Fatmawati is suspected of losing control after turning the steering wheel to the left to avoid a vehicle in front of her. Suddenly, the car she was driving hit a roadside barrier, crashed into a fence, then bounced back and overturned.
The injured passengers were immediately rushed to several hospitals in Kupang City, including Siloam Kupang Hospital, Kartini Kupang Hospital, Bhayangkara Titus Uly Kupang Hospital, and WZ Johanes Kupang Regional General Hospital.
According to Triken, one passenger named Mia Lestari (32) died after being treated at WZ Johanes Kupang Regional General Hospital. It is known that Mia suffered a head injury.
Meanwhile, Fatmawati suffered minor injuries and bruises on several parts of her body and is still undergoing medical treatment. The other victims suffered minor to moderate injuries such as abrasions, swelling, bruises, and lacerations.
“It is suspected that the driver was under the influence of alcohol while driving,” Triken added.
