The Cirebon City Government has officially implemented a Car Free Day policy for civil servants (ASN) on Thursday (9 April 2026). This is part of a culture of energy conservation as a follow-up to Circular Letter from the Minister of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Number 800.1.5/3349/SJ.

Through the Mayor of Cirebon’s Circular Letter Number 000.8/7/ORG/2026, the Cirebon City Government applies Car Free Day every Thursday for ASN and local public enterprises (BUMD). They are encouraged to use public transport or non-fuel vehicles to commute to and from work every Thursday.

In addition to saving energy, the policy aims to reduce air pollution, improve public health, and empower small and medium enterprises (UMKM). Not only that, the Cirebon City Government also implements a limited and measured work-from-home (WFH) scheme. WFH is applied one day per week, namely every Friday.

Observations on Thursday morning (9 April 2026) showed that the policy is being implemented by various groups, from employees and department heads to members of the Cirebon City DPRD. They commute to the office by running, cycling, or taking city transport (angkot).

One of them is Ridwan Djayasukarta, an employee of the Cirebon City BPKPD. He chose to run from his home in the Pembangunan area to the office on Jalan Pengampon.

“The distance is about four kilometres,” said Ridwan.

Feeling unburdened, Ridwan instead sees it as exercise. Therefore, he even deliberately took a detour so that the distance covered became about seven kilometres.

Ridwan also intentionally prepared his uniform and work equipment for Thursday since the day before. “The uniform for Thursday I have stored at the office since Wednesday,” he said.
