Car Free Day in Margonda, Depok Cancelled on 15 and 22 March 2026
DEPOK — The Car Free Day (CFD) programme in Depok City has been suspended for two weeks during mid-March 2026, coinciding with preparations for and celebration of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah.
Nita Hernita, Secretary of the Depok City Transportation Office, announced that the policy applies to two consecutive Sundays: 15 and 22 March 2026.
“In connection with preparations for and celebration of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah, the Car Free Day (CFD) programme in Depok City is temporarily suspended on Sunday, 15 March 2026 and Sunday, 22 March 2026,” Nita said on Friday 13 March 2026, according to the official Depok City Government website.
According to Nita, the decision was made to enable residents to focus more on preparing their requirements ahead of the Islamic holiday.
“We express our gratitude for the attention and participation of the community in supporting the Car Free Day programme in Depok City,” she said.
Nita also conveyed Eid al-Fitr greetings to the public, concluding with traditional Islamic greetings: “Happy Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah. Please forgive all shortcomings in word and deed.”
The estimate is based on the hilal (new moon) elevation map for 2026 released by the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) to monitor the possibility of the young crescent moon appearing as a marker for the beginning of Shawwal.
According to this data, the hilal position on 29 Ramadhan 1447 Hijriah, or 19 March 2026, is estimated not to meet the visibility criteria used by member states of MABIMS (the ministerial body comprising Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore).
MABIMS criteria require that the Islamic month can be determined when the hilal elevation is at least 3 degrees and elongation is at least 6.4 degrees at sunset. However, according to the forecast map, the hilal elevation on Thursday 19 March 2026 is estimated to range between 1.25 and 2.75 degrees, with elongation of approximately 5 to 6 degrees.
If the hilal position fails to meet these criteria, the month of Ramadhan is typically extended to 30 days, with the beginning of Shawwal estimated to fall on 21 March 2026.
