Security was tightened in the Indian capital, New Delhi, on Friday (16 October 2026). Police warned of potential traffic disruption ahead of a large protest planned by the political movement known as the “Cockroach Movement” in the city’s central business district.

The protest is part of a series of demonstrations calling for the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters allege that revisions to voter lists carried out by the commission favour the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Reuters reported that the youth-led movement involves the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), opposition groups and left-wing student organisations. They have staged demonstrations almost daily throughout October.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said Friday’s protest was being held in support of two party leaders who were detained and jailed for five days this week. They were detained after staging a demonstration at a protest site in violation of an existing ban.

Millions of voters removed from the rolls

The controversy began with revisions to India’s voter lists. More than 130 million voters were removed from the rolls during the revision process.

The Election Commission has denied accusations that it favours any particular political party. It said voters whose names were wrongly deleted could register again.

The BJP, meanwhile, accused rival groups of seeking to undermine confidence in democracy by questioning what it considers a legitimate electoral process. The latest demonstrations were also prompted by a report in The Indian Express saying that two of Kumar’s deputies had privately raised concerns about changes to voter lists, registration procedures and the digital systems being used.

Park closed as police restrict demonstrations

The CJP and left-wing student groups called on supporters to gather at Central Park in Connaught Place, a popular shopping and dining district in New Delhi. Supporters were expected to wave India’s national flag on Friday evening.

Delhi Police urged the public not to join the gathering. City authorities also announced on Thursday evening that the park would be closed for two days for administrative reasons.

“People are strongly urged not to join any such assembly,” the police said, adding that they could facilitate a limited group carrying the national flag and singing the national anthem at a location deemed suitable.

Local traders have also petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the demonstration. They fear it could cause substantial losses, after a similar protest planned for the previous weekend did not go ahead following a security operation.

Cockroach Movement draws political scrutiny

The Cockroach Movement has emerged as one of the major political challenges to Modi’s government and the BJP during their 12 years in power. Earlier this year, a days-long sit-in by the movement’s supporters helped prompt Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign over an examination paper leak.

The latest demonstrations highlight rising political tensions in India, particularly over the transparency of the electoral process and the management of voter lists.
