Capital market supervisory body hosts conference

JAKARTA (JP): The Capital Market Supervisory Agency is hosting a two-day conference, starting today, that will bring together more than 900 participants, including fund managers, investors and market players.

The conference, held to commemorate the agency's 19th anniversary, will feature domestic and foreign dignitaries as well as capital market experts.

The first day of the conference will feature Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad, who will deliver his keynote address on the Indonesian capital market -- preparing for the 21st century.

Mar'ie, accompanied by the agency's chairman I Putu Gede Ary Suta, will hold an open discussion on the development of the Indonesian capital market in a session to be chaired by Rodney Ward, chairman of the Asia-Pacific Division of SBC Warburg.

The session will continue with a talk about the opportunities and challenges of the Indonesian capital market, which will feature panelists from the Union Bank of Switzerland and Waterfront Securities together with Cyril Noerhadi, chairman of the Jakarta Stock Exchange, and Henny Sender of the Far Eastern Economic Review.

Bank Indonesia Governor J. Soedradjad Djiwandono will then talk on Indonesia's monetary policy and support for capital market development.

Juwono Sudarsono, vice governor of the Institute for National Resilience, and Donald Hanna from Goldman Sachs will discuss Indonesia's social and political climate, which are related to the investment climate here.

At the anniversary dinner, Siti Hediati Prabowo, a commissioner of the Jakarta Stock Exchange, will launch the Capital Market Society, followed by a special presentation from a former Australian prime minister, Robert (Bob) Hawke, who will discus a global perspective of Asian values.

Tomorrow, Director General of State-owned Enterprises Bacelius Ruru, Putu Ary Suta and representatives from Merrill Lynch of the United States and Nikko Securities of Japan will debate the future of privatization and the vision for Indonesia's capital market. The debate will be chaired by Karen Koh of Asia Business News.

A major feature of the conference will be the public presentations by state companies preparing for privatization, including Bank Negara Indonesia 1946, electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara, mining firm PT Aneka Tambang, steel maker PT Krakatau Steel and toll road operator PT Jasa Marga. The sessions will be joined by local conglomerates Sinar Mas, Gadjah Tunggal and Texmaco. (rid)
