Cap Go Meh 2026 Becomes a Symbol of Harmony and Diversity in Singkawang
Singkawang, West Kalimantan — The Singkawang municipal government has stated that the 2026 Cap Go Meh Festival, to be held on 3 March, will serve as a symbol of harmony and diversity amongst the community in the region.
Singkawang Mayor Tjhai Chui Mie said in Singkawang on Sunday that the Cap Go Meh Festival is not merely an annual agenda, but rather a cultural heritage that has grown from the traditions and ethnic and religious diversity of Singkawang City.
“This Cap Go Meh Festival is not merely an annual agenda, but rather a culture that represents the pride of Singkawang City’s residents. This tradition has emerged and developed amidst diversity, whilst simultaneously serving as a symbol of harmony between people of different religions and ethnicities,” he said.
According to him, through this celebration, the world can witness how Singkawang’s residents live peacefully side by side, respecting one another, and mutually supporting each other in social life.
He noted that this year’s Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh celebration hold special significance because they take place during the holy month of Ramadhan. This moment is considered a tangible expression of the tolerance that has long been established in the city.
Additionally, a torch parade welcoming the holy month of Ramadhan can also be held coinciding with Chinese New Year’s Eve in Singkawang.
“This is a special moment for us to demonstrate to the world that peace is beautiful, admirable, and brings happiness,” he said.
Regarding security, he stated that Singkawang municipal government, together with the Indonesian military and national police, is conducting integrated preparations to ensure that the Cap Go Meh Festival on 3 March 2026 runs safely, in good order, and smoothly.
In addition to security measures, the regional government is also strengthening promotional efforts to expand the reach of the Cap Go Meh Festival and enable it to attract both domestic and international tourists.
He expressed hope that the Cap Go Meh Festival will continue to be an eagerly anticipated annual event for tourists and become a symbol of pride for Singkawang City at both national and international levels.
