Cangkringan District Head Revokes Letter Requesting ASN and Teachers Contribute to Independence Day Fund

The Panewu of Cangkringan, Sleman Regency, Tamzis Sarwana, confirmed that the controversial circular regarding participation fees for the 81st Independence Day celebrations was revoked on Tuesday (14/7). The decision follows widespread public outcry after the letter circulated on social media. “We have issued a cancellation letter for the request for funding assistance for the 81st Independence Day activities, numbered 04/PAN.HUT/VII/2026 dated 14 July 2026,” Tamzis stated on Thursday (16/7/2026). He stressed that the previous letter, number 02/PAN.HUT/VI/2026 dated 7 July 2026, is now null and void. The committee will not collect any fees and the commemoration will be held simply. The original viral letter, signed by the committee chair, secretary, and the Cangkringan district head, outlined a total estimated budget of IDR 153 million for a flag ceremony, art performances, an MSME bazaar, and a state reception. It requested a contribution of IDR 20,000 from each employee and official, to be paid to the committee treasurer by 7 August 2026. The social media post that sparked the controversy included an illustration of a woman counting money and a caption highlighting complaints from netizens about teachers with modest salaries being asked to donate.
