Canggu Bar Shooter Arrested at Soekarno-Hatta Airport

The flight of the perpetrator of a brutal shooting at a bar in the tourist area of Canggu, North Kuta, Badung, Bali, ended at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Police arrested the suspect, identified by the initials H, moments after he landed in Jakarta, less than 24 hours after the shooting that injured two people.

Information gathered indicates H is an Indonesian citizen. After firing shots at the scene, he did not immediately leave Bali. H hid for a time before departing for Jakarta via I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.

H’s escape was eventually detected by authorities. A joint team from the North Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the Badung Police Criminal Investigation Division moved quickly, coordinating with the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police, as well as Ngurah Rai Immigration and Soekarno-Hatta Airport Immigration.

H was subsequently intercepted and arrested shortly after arriving at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Saturday evening. Following his arrest, he was immediately flown back to Bali to undergo intensive examination at the Badung Police headquarters.

Badung Police Chief AKBP Joseph Edward Purba was not yet willing to detail the arrest process when confirmed. Police stated that the details of the case would be conveyed later. Previously, police suspected the perpetrator had attempted to flee Bali shortly after the shooting.

The incident occurred at The Shady Pig bar in Canggu in the early hours of Friday. The incident began with an altercation inside the bar between H and a Chinese national with the initials EA, aged 25. Seeing the dispute, a security guard with the initials IMYM, aged 32, intervened to break it up. However, H then opened fire. A brass-coloured projectile reportedly penetrated the security guard’s thigh before continuing its trajectory and lodging in EA’s thigh. Both victims are still receiving medical treatment at hospital.
