Canadian Paul wins Super Car series
JAKARTA (JP): Robert J. Paul of Canada lived up to his favorite billing and won the national Super Car race series at Sentul, near Bogor, Sunday despite only coming second on the day.
Paul, an oil company consultant based in Jakarta, ended with 82 points. He was followed by Indra Saksono on 77 points and Chandra Alim with 69 points.
The Super Car race was the fifth and final leg of the Super Car race series.
In Sunday's 12-lap race, Paul, driving a BMW M3, clocked 19 minutes 5.682 seconds. He came second behind Chandra who recorded a time of 18:48.910. Indra Saksono was third in 19:06.368 and Anthony Walker of England fourth in 19:06.368.
Paul also used his M3 in the national drag race.
Paul was competing for the GT Radial team. He won the Super Car series in 1955 and came third last year.
Commenting on his victory, Paul said racing had become his main hobby and that next year he hoped to participate in the Super Car and drag races again.
"I learned racing at the Jim Russels racing school in England. Several Indonesians also went to this school," Paul said.
In the drag race series, Paul was competing for the Star Mild team and also ended the winner, after amassing 99 points. Ronny Hermawan was second with 54 points and Wie Wie Rianto third with 43 points.
Paul competed in all eight legs of the drag race. He has won three races, two in Bali and Manado on Sept. 2 and Sept. 16 respectively and another at Sentul on Sept. 28.
Sunday's Super Car race was followed by Formula Asia and Group N races.
Alvin Bahar from the Djarum team won the Formula Asia race and collected a total of 162 points from four legs of the race. Haridharma Manoppo from GG Humphuss team was in second with 146 points and Fino Saksono of Primajasa team was in third with 113 points.
The Group N race was won by Indra Saksono followed by Jimmy Lukita and Marshall Jachja. (lnt)
