A Canadian national with the initials ML was found dead with a cord around his neck in a room at the Greenhill Hotel in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Police recovered a number of personal belongings from the man, including a Canadian Military Police badge.

The 61-year-old man had only arrived in Labuan Bajo on a direct flight from Singapore on 12 February, one day before he was found dead in a suspected suicide. The body of the Canadian national was discovered on Friday (13 February 2026).

Head of the Class II Immigration Office at Labuan Bajo, Charles Christian Mathaus, said ML had left a will in his room. He had entered Indonesia for tourism purposes on a visa on arrival.

ML was staying alone at the hotel. His body was first discovered by hotel staff. Based on the belongings and identification found by police in the hotel room, ML is believed to have been a former member of his country's military.

Documents recovered included a Canadian Armed Forces membership card, a Canadian Military Police badge, and a Canadian Military Police card. In addition to these documents, police found a number of the man's personal belongings.

"Including a passport, wallet, Canadian Military Police badge, and CAA insurance documents," said Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at West Manggarai Police, Adjunct Commissioner Lufthi Darmawan Aditya, on Saturday.

Labuan Bajo Immigration and West Manggarai Police have coordinated with the Canadian Embassy in Jakarta regarding further proceedings concerning ML's death. The body currently remains at Komodo Regional General Hospital in Labuan Bajo.
