Canadian killed in accident

SERANG, West Java: A Canadian was killed and another badly injured in a car accident on the Serang-Cilegon highway on Wednesday, the Antara news agency reported.

Yan McLyn, aged 42, was killed instantly, while his compatriot identified only as 41-year-old Ted by Antara, is in a coma and has been flown to Singapore for medical attention. Their Indonesian driver, Lukman, was also killed in the accident.

The Canadians were employees of PT Beckock, one of the contractors at the steam-powered Suralaya power plant.

The three men were on their way to Jakarta from Merak when the accident occurred at Pelamunan village.

According to witnesses, a truck loaded with calcium rocks coming from the opposite direction suddenly braked and then overturned onto their car.

McLyn and Lukman were both seated in the front while Ted was in the back.

McLyn's body will be flown to Canada.

Serang police chief Lt. Col. Ridhwan Karim said the truck driver fled the scene and is still at large. (emb)
