Moscow (ANTARA) - A number of economists have informed Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne that they assess the impact of the trade conflict with the United States as still being manageable, according to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday citing participants of a closed-door meeting.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada failed to reach an agreement in August 2026, prompting the US to impose 50 per cent tariffs on several Canadian products valued at US$20 billion (approximately Rp358.6 trillion).

Canada responded by implementing tariffs on steel products, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics from the US.

In early September 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada is prepared to sign a trade agreement with the US once Washington is ready to do so.

He also stated that dialogue can only proceed once US officials cease their “harsh” rhetoric and demonstrate seriousness in conducting negotiations.
