Canadian-blooded John Herdmann set to meet Victor Dethan in Indonesian national squad
New manager of the Indonesian national team, John Herdmann, will soon commence his coaching agenda by scouting several promising talents within the country.
Notably, amongst the list of players, he will meet a young winger who possesses a special connection to his birthplace—the Maple Leaf nation, Canada.
The player in question is Victor Dethan, a key player for PSM Makassar who has mixed Canadian-Kupang heritage.
This meeting holds particular significance for John Herdmann given his extensive history as the former coach of the Canadian national team before ultimately deciding to take charge of the Indonesian squad.
Victor Dethan was born in Kupang on 11 July 2004 to a father from Kupang and a mother of Canadian nationality. His natural talent as a product of Juku Eja’s own development programme attracted the attention of national talent scouts from his teenage years.
During this season’s Super League 2025-2026 competition, the 21-year-old player has displayed increasingly mature performances.
From 19 matches played so far, he has already contributed 2 goals and 2 assists.
This impressive record has led to predictions that he will become one of the future pillars in the tactical scheme championed by the new manager.
PSM’s assistant coach, Ahmad Amiruddin, hopes that the young player will catch the attention of the national team’s coaching staff during the centralised training camp.
“I hope he demonstrates maximum performance during the training camp so he can become a primary choice,” said PSM Makassar assistant coach Ahmad Amiruddin regarding his hopes that Victor will be noticed by John Herdmann, as reported by Tribun Timur.
“He possesses sufficient individual quality.”
“The rest is mentality that needs further development, confidence and not being afraid to make mistakes,” he added.
