Washington (ANTARA) – The measles outbreak declared in Canada in October 2024 has ended, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said on Monday.

“Working with public health officials at provincial and territorial level, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) today announced that the multi-jurisdictional measles outbreak has ended,” the agency said in a press release.

PHAC said the outbreak status was ended after no cases had been reported for two months. During the outbreak, health authorities recorded more than 6,400 cases of measles across 10 provinces and territories.

Most cases involved people who had not been adequately vaccinated against the disease.

“Although this outbreak has ended, measles continues to spread in various parts of the world, and cases linked to international travel are still expected in Canada,” the agency said.

The announcement came amid a rise in measles cases in the United States. This year, 4,410 cases have been confirmed across 47 jurisdictions in 42 separate outbreaks. In 2025, the US recorded 2,289 measles cases.

Canada succeeded in stopping domestic and endemic measles transmission in the late 1990s. Between 1998 and 2024, the country reported an average of 91 measles cases a year, most of them caused by cases imported from affected regions.

However, Canada lost its measles elimination status in November 2025 because of the outbreak, which has now ended.
