Canada-US Relations Heat Up Before Ottawa Finally Retaliates with Tariffs

Trade relations between Canada and the United States have entered a new phase of tension. The Canadian government has officially announced the imposition of retaliatory tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on various products from the United States. The policy is scheduled to take effect on 8 September 2026.

Before Ottawa ultimately made that decision, the situation had already heated up. US President Donald Trump had levelled sharp criticism at Ottawa. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday (23/8/2026), Trump accused Canada of trying to profit from the US without providing an equal contribution. “Canada wants the benefits of being a state, without being a state!!!” Trump wrote.

Trump also highlighted Canada’s tariff policy on the US agricultural sector, which he considered detrimental. He stressed that such practices would no longer be tolerated by his administration. “They have also charged our great farmers massive tariffs for years. No more!!!” he asserted.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the US move to impose new tariffs was an attempt to divide Canadians. Carney called Trump’s policy a “miscalculation” and assured that Ottawa would protect its national interests.

In addition, Carney took the drastic step of temporarily suspending trade talks with Washington and recalling Canadian negotiators to Ottawa. Carney stressed that Canada would not give in to US demands deemed unacceptable. He also emphasised the importance of safeguarding sovereignty over critical minerals, which are a strategic Canadian asset in the global market. “Progress (in negotiations) has not been sufficient to meet the objectives of the Canadian people,” he concluded.
