Canada to open new consulate

HANOI (AFP): Canada plans to open a consulate in Ho Chi Minh
City, southern Vietnam, a spokesman for the Canadian embassy in
Hanoi said yesterday.

Canada's business mission in the southern economic center will
be transformed into a consulate when the requisite approvals are
issued "perhaps within months," the spokesman said.

The Canadian embassy in the capital Hanoi was inaugurated in
July 1993 and its first ambassador, Christine Desloges, was named
last October.
