Canada Says Proposed US Tariffs Violate Trilateral Trade Agreement

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that the US government’s announced intention to impose new 50 per cent tariffs on various Canadian goods is the latest in a series of unilateral trade actions that directly violate the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). In a statement on Monday, Carney said the US has transformed all its trade relationships, including those covered by CUSMA, over the past 18 months, and Canada has submitted a series of detailed and comprehensive proposals to resolve the dispute and modernise the agreement. “We are prepared to intensify these discussions in the coming weeks,” Carney said. The Canadian PM added that his country believes in the benefits of free and fair trade. He also noted that the trade dispute has triggered increased costs for the public, particularly among US citizens. Carney expressed Canada’s willingness to engage intensively in addressing unresolved issues with the US for the mutual benefit of both countries’ citizens.
