Canada ready to support ASEAN in optimising energy resilience
The Canadian government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting ASEAN’s major mission to achieve energy security through the diversification of energy sources and the optimisation of renewable energy, amidst geopolitical tensions that are prompting many nations to seek alternative resources.
Weldon Epp, Assistant Deputy Minister for Indo-Pacific Affairs at Global Affairs Canada, understands and supports the struggles of ASEAN nations in balancing sustainability with economic growth.
“Canada is proud to be a partner in these efforts, amidst the strengthening of the strategic partnership with ASEAN, which is based on a shared commitment to economic development,” said Epp during an ASEAN-Canada strategic dialogue on energy security in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He added that disruptions in the energy market have revealed vulnerabilities in current systems, ranging from supply chain weaknesses to uneven infrastructure. At the same time, he noted, energy demand in ASEAN continues to rise.
“The increase is much faster than in other regions of the world, but this is positive when viewed through the lens of economic development,” said the official from the Canadian institution equivalent to a foreign ministry.
Canada is also prepared to extend a helping hand to assist ASEAN.
He explained that Canada is intensively involved in several energy infrastructure projects within the ASEAN region. Furthermore, Canada also contributes financially to support sustainable development in the region.
Through the ASEAN-Canada Trust Fund, Canada has contributed 1.38 million Canadian dollars to projects related to carbon capture and storage, alongside the ASEAN Centre for Energy.
“Together, Canada and ASEAN can build a partnership framework in the areas of support, policy, capital, and research that can unlock the potential for new projects in the region,” said Epp.
He also welcomed the inaugural dialogue regarding energy security and energy transition between Canada and ASEAN, which brings together new ideas and strengthens the partnership to ensure ASEAN can maintain energy security amidst global volatility.
