Canada and US Agree to Open Gordie Howe Bridge to Strengthen Supply Chain

Canada and the United States have agreed to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge on 27 July, with the support of the US government, according to a statement released on Friday. The agreement was announced through a statement from Canada’s Ministry of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, which said the bridge would strengthen the North American supply chain, support the manufacturing sector, and improve the smooth distribution of essential goods. To support the bridge’s opening, Canada and the US agreed on cooperative measures regarding toll rate governance and transparency, including the establishment of a 15-year economic development fund financed from a portion of the bridge’s operational profits. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority will also work with US counterparts on toll rate adjustments and seek approval for certain non-market-related toll rate changes. “After years of planning, partnership, and construction, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will soon open, providing a new connection for the region while strengthening one of the most important trade corridors in the world,” said Canada’s Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Gregor Robertson. “This nation-building project is a testament to what Canada can achieve when we come together with a shared vision,” he added. US President Donald Trump also welcomed the announcement. “I was able to get a FAR BETTER DEAL for the United States, and therefore the new, spectacular Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, will open on July 27 as scheduled,” he wrote on Truth Social. Trump described the previous agreement on the bridge as unacceptable, adding that the new deal is very good and fair. “Thank you and congratulations to the Government of Canada. May we enjoy many years of success through this magnificent construction,” he added. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a major crossing linking Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, designed to improve cross-border mobility and freight transport. In its statement, the Canadian ministry noted that the Windsor-Detroit corridor handles hundreds of millions of dollars in trade daily, making it the busiest international land crossing in North America. Under the 2012 Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement, Canada bore the full cost of constructing the bridge. In return, the Canadian government will receive all toll revenues until its investment is recouped, after which the state of Michigan is entitled to 50 percent of the net operational profits.
