Can Jakarta reduce pollution?
From Neraca
The air quality in Jakarta gives cause for concern. The
capital city, with an area of only 560 square kilometers, has 9.5
million inhabitants. It is ranked third among countries in the
world with the highest level of pollution. At least 70 percent of
Jakarta's air pollution is caused by the gas emission of motor
vehicles.
The high mobility of motor vehicles in Jakarta increases
pollution. It is aggravated by the additives contained in the
fuel. The pollution is a major hazard for our health.
Vehicle owners should be aware of the condition and,
accordingly, maintain their vehicles properly in order to reduce
dust particles, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide from gas
emissions.
Only by doing so can we ensure the health of all Jakarta
residents. According to the World Bank, the reduction of various
hazardous material from gas emissions will lessen the death risk.
It will also be a sizable reduction of medical expenses.
When will it not be necessary to cover our nose when we are
behind a motor vehicle in order to avoid the dark exhaust fumes
of vehicles like city buses? When will the air be clean and
healthy? The reply is when people, including public vehicle
owners, are ready to maintain their motor vehicles.
