The Arief Budiman tragedy is an irony. The tragedy which
involves Arief occurred in the Satya Wacana University, a campus
which should set exemplary behavior based on democratic
principles and thus serve as a benchmark for democracy.

A campus should reflect academic values that are indispensable
with the values of truth, justice, good sense, critical analysis
and openness. As a matter of fact, conflict and differences of
opinion are a common phenomenon in campus life.

A democratic solution should be sought to every difference of
opinion that may occur on the campus, instead of resorting to
undemocratic means such as repression and arbitrary decision.
