Campaigners too tired to come

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Approximately 250 women in the infamous red-light district at Batu Raden tourist resort, 14 kilometers north of here, are bearing the brunt of the daily street campaign rallies.

They reported on Monday a sharp drop in the number of visits since campaigning began on May 19.

"Maybe people are too tired of rallying around to drop by," said Yuni, 20, a prostitute from the West Java town of Cirebon as she joined in an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) campaign.

Yuni was only one of five occupants of the brothel who killed time going to street rallies. They said they were tired of waiting for customers that never came.

"Who knows we might get a customer in the street," said Yuni, speeding off on a motorbike she borrowed from a customer. (45)
