Cambodia becomes full ASEAN member
HANOI (AFP): The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will accept Cambodia as a full member at a meeting in Hanoi on April 30, a Vietnamese official said on Wednesday.
A special ASEAN meeting will be called for April 29 and April 30 in Hanoi to formally make Cambodia the regional group's 10th member, said the official.
ASEAN leaders agreed at their Hanoi summit in December to hold admission ceremonies in the Vietnamese capital once Cambodia had satisfied all membership requirements, including the full establishment of a government.
Earlier this month Cambodia's new parliament approved the creation of a Senate, the final remaining obstacle to full membership.
ASEAN groups Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
