Calya Driver Who Was Attacked by Residents Claims Sharp Weapons and Fake Plates Belong to Brother

Jakarta – A Toyota Calya driver, Hafiz Mahendra (25), claims that the sharp weapons and fake number plates found in his vehicle during an incident in which he drove against traffic and was attacked by residents on Wednesday (25 February 2026) belonged to his brother.

“He claims they belong to his brother. However, we are still investigating because we haven’t yet found his brother. Since he’s the one who brought them, he can say anything,” said Roby Heri Saputra, head of the criminal investigation unit at Jakarta Pusat Police, when contacted on Sunday (1 March 2026).

“We haven’t found his brother yet; we’re still searching because he’s out of the area,” he added.

Hafiz claimed to be from Karawang and was heading to Ancol. When stopped by police officers, he attempted to flee because he was afraid of being fined for not carrying a driving licence and vehicle registration documents.

“He said he wanted to go to Ancol for a holiday and was afraid of the police. We’re also suspicious about why he behaved that way,” Roby said.

A black Toyota Calya that drove against traffic and was chased by a crowd on Gunung Sahari Road in Sawah Besar, central Jakarta, went viral on Wednesday. According to a video posted on the Instagram account @lintasjakartaupdate, the vehicle travelled at high speed in the wrong direction on a congested road.

Hafiz, who was carrying several small children as passengers, was subsequently stopped by other motorists and police officers.

Police found several sharp weapons and three fake number plates inside the vehicle. Additionally, the identity card (KTP) that Hafiz was carrying turned out to be fake. This was discovered after police conducted further investigations based on other findings.

However, details regarding Hafiz’s true identity have not yet been disclosed.
