A driver of a Toyota Calya with license plate number D 1640 AHB, Hafiz Mahendra (25), drove against traffic on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, after panicking when stopped by police for using fake license plates. Central Jakarta Police Chief, Kombes Reynold Hutagalung, explained that the incident began when officers stopped the vehicle for inspection of its documents.

“Officers stopped the vehicle to check the documents of the four-wheeled vehicle. Because the vehicle was using fake license plates. Hafiz panicked and tried to escape by accelerating,” said Reynold at the Tanah Abang Metro Police Station, Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

The incident occurred around 17:30 WIB. While escaping, Hafiz drove his car against traffic. This action angered residents and other drivers at the location.

Several residents tried to stop the black car, and some even broke the rear window with a helmet. However, Hafiz continued his escape, hitting several motorcycles and cars.

“So residents and motorcyclists were angry because the driver was driving against traffic, resulting in injuries to motorcyclists and broken car windows,” said the Police Chief.

After the vehicle was cornered, officers immediately secured Hafiz to prevent the crowd from attacking him. He was then taken to the Traffic Unit at Lapangan Banteng.

As a result of the incident, one motorcyclist was injured after being hit by the suspect’s car.

“There were no fatalities, but there was one injured person, and some cars and motorcycles were hit,” explained Reynold.

Previously, the reckless actions of the Toyota Calya driver who drove against traffic on Jalan Gunung Sahari went viral on social media after the car hit several vehicles around 17:15 WIB. (E-3)
