Jakarta – In addition to traffic violations, the driver of a black Toyota Calya who caused an uproar by driving the wrong way and was subsequently attacked by a mob in the Gunung Sahari area of Central Jakarta, has been formally named a suspect for weapons possession and vehicle registration plate forgery.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Hafiz Mahendra, was designated after police searched his vehicle. Officers discovered a toy firearm, one machete, one dagger, and four forged number plates inside the vehicle.

“The driver has been designated a suspect for weapons possession, including charges related to fraudulent vehicle registration data,” said Budi Hermanto, Head of Public Relations at Metro Jaya Police, on Friday, 27 February 2026.

Hafiz is currently being held at Central Jakarta Metro Police headquarters. Investigators are still examining the reasons why the suspect was carrying weapons in his vehicle. For weapons possession and number plate forgery, Hafiz faces charges under Article 307 Paragraph 1 and/or Article 391 Paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code, with a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment.

“Whether the weapons were intended for other activities is still being investigated,” he added.

Previously reported, Hafiz Mahendra’s reckless driving in the Gunung Sahari area led to significant consequences. After being detained by police and the incident going viral, his status is now officially that of a traffic violator facing serious criminal penalties.

Metro Jaya Police has charged Hafiz under Article 311 Paragraphs 1, 2, and 3 of the Road Traffic and Transportation Law, as explained by Komarudin, Director of Traffic at Metro Jaya Police.

“The suspect faces charges under Article 311 Paragraphs 1, 2, and 3, with a sentence of up to four years imprisonment and a fine of 8 million rupiah,” he stated on Thursday, 26 February 2026.

Urine tests revealed Hafiz tested negative for narcotics and alcohol. However, further violations were uncovered. Police found that the vehicle was using a Vehicle Registration Mark (TNKB) that did not correspond to its intended use.

Komarudin explained that before the incident, officers had already detected irregularities when the vehicle was travelling at high speed.
