The incident, involving a black Toyota Calya driving against traffic and being pursued by a crowd on Gunung Sahari Street in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, went viral on Wednesday. Based on video posted on Instagram account @lintasjakartaupdate, the vehicle drove at high speed in the wrong direction on a congested thoroughfare. During its journey, the vehicle clipped several cars and motorcycles before eventually stopping after being pursued by both civilians and police officers.
According to the Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Reynold Hutagalung, the vehicle was driven by a man from Sidoarjo District, East Java, with initials HM. The vehicle carried one female passenger.
Hutagalung revealed that the incident originated from a driver suspected of using a false number plate. Before driving against traffic, the vehicle had been stopped by police at approximately 17:00 WIB. “The vehicle with licence plate D-1640-AHB was suspected of using a false number plate, and was therefore stopped by two traffic police officers on duty,” Hutagalung told journalists at the Tanah Abang Police Station on Wednesday evening.
