Calls to restrict alcohol sales
SEMARANG, Central Java: Members of the Central Java
Legislative Council are calling on the authorities to control the
manufacturing and selling of alcoholic beverages, following
reports that several people have died after consuming a
traditional alcoholic drink.
Several people in Mojolaban, Sukoharjo, died after drinking
ciu, a locally-made beverage that mixes alcohol from sugar cane
with soft drinks, also popularly called "three dimensions".
Umi Chasanah, a council member, said the authorities should
closely supervise the operation of beverage manufacturers and
ensure that they comply with the standard requirements.
Another member, Robbani Thoha, said he opposed the suggestion
to close down traditional beverage plants because they employ
thousands of people, Antara reported.
Robbani said the government should instead restrict the
licensing system to ensure better supervision. (emb)
