Shortly after its launch, the latest iPhone 18 has faced threats of a boycott. Activists are calling for such a campaign due to concerns regarding the source of minerals used in the device.

The boycott call was voiced by Team Congo, a group focused on issues in the Congo. They shared an Instagram post titled ‘Why Boycott iPhone 18?’.

According to Team Congo, minerals such as cobalt and tantalum are used in the manufacturing of electronic devices, including smartphones. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a primary source for several of these minerals.

Furthermore, the group stated that the illegal trade of minerals has funded armed groups in the Congo region. This contributes to violence, displacement, and child labour.

Team Congo is asking consumers to consider how frequently they replace their devices. For instance, they suggest using phones for as long as possible and considering the purchase of second-hand or refurbished handsets, as reported by ABP Live on Monday (21/09/2026).

Consumers are also encouraged to ask themselves whether they truly need to purchase a new phone. Additionally, they should question the origins and supply chains of devices and avoid buying more electronic products than necessary.

Apple itself has denied that its factories, directly or indirectly, fund or profit armed groups in the Congo or neighbouring countries. The company also acknowledged the difficulties in tracing certain minerals within the supply chain.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was reported to have shared the post in her Instagram Story. However, she has not yet released a separate statement regarding the boycott.
