Calls for Indonesia to withdraw from BoP; government listens while monitoring the situation
Indonesia’s Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning / Head of the National Land Agency (BPN), Nusron Wahid, has said the government is listening to calls for Indonesia to withdraw from the Board of Peace (BoP). After attending an iftar gathering with President Prabowo Subianto and the ulama, Nusron said the government is not anti-criticism of the view, stating: “The government is not anti-criticism. We listen while assessing the situation, but we will prove on the ground that this diplomacy is the best path to create peace.” He spoke at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Thursday night (5 March 2026). If not via BoP, Prabowo asked how Indonesia could contribute to world peace if there is no specific forum to participate in. “The President asked, if anyone offers us to push for leaving BoP, then we negotiate to create peace — in what arena? In which forum?” Nusron explained. “Because the forum to conduct peace talks on Palestine and Gaza, today, is only BoP,” he added. “The President’s position is that Indonesia has accepted BoP as a means, as an effort toward peace. At least this effort should be tried first. Let the endeavour be attempted before asking to exit,” said the Golkar politician. Earlier, Deputy Speaker of the MPR Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW) urged Prabowo to seriously consider exiting the Board of Peace (BoP). Especially if the Trump-created body would widen the war rather than bring about peace. He said this while responding to calls for Indonesia to leave BoP following the military aggression against Iran carried out by the United States and Israel. “I appreciate the demand and it would be very good if Mr Prabowo truly considers it, because Indonesia’s presence should not be used as a stamp of legitimacy to widen this war, you know. Peace should instead prevent war from spreading everywhere,” he said at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday (3 March 2026). However, the PKS politician said the current conditions are contrary to that aim. Hidayat then again mentioned the government’s earlier willingness to exit BoP if the organisation’s main objective is not realised.
