Called 'Too Confident' About the Economy, Purbaya: This Is a Calculated Move!
Minister of Finance Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has rejected suggestions that his remarks imply he is over-optimistic about Indonesia’s economy. He said he is not overly confident; rather, his statements are a calculated move or measured action. ‘This isn’t over-optimistic, but a calculated move. We are calculating the impact. After all, my economic theory is complete. It’s just practice now, so I will apply it,’ he told the Jogjakarta Financial Festival at the Jogja Expo Centre (JEC) on Friday (21 May 2026).
He pointed out that the economic data he presents is not over-optimistic. Purbaya also highlighted those who say the economy growing 5.39% signals collapse. Yet, when the economy grows 5.61%, they say the data is fake. ‘Later they will find another reason. We will ensure the engines of the economy run well,’ he said.
Purbaya acknowledges Indonesia’s economy has been hit by various negative sentiments since the end of last year, one of them the MSCI sentiment. The government continues to improve market conditions in the archipelago.
‘Though not perfect, we won’t repeat what happened with the IMF. I’m a touch smarter than the IMF,’ he said.
With these improvements, he is confident future economic growth will be driven by the domestic private sector. ‘In six months’ time, you’ll see that the hardships will ease for people,’ he said.
