Called Out by Purbaya Over Under Invoicing, This is Musim Mas's Case Track Record
PT Musim Mas Group has cemented its position as a globally integrated palm oil corporate entity. Operating across multiple continents, the company routinely highlights its sustainability profile to the public. Despite recording a series of commercial achievements and massive social initiatives, the company’s operational track record in Indonesia is now facing a severe test. This agribusiness giant has been dragged into a series of large-scale legal issues encompassing criminal corruption in export trade governance, indications of international tax manipulation, and environmental destruction cases in its upstream operational areas.
As a global player, Musim Mas management proactively releases various operational and social empowerment achievements. Based on the corporate report for the 2024 fiscal year, the company’s accumulated sales value reached US$ 8.2 billion. The company manages a massive operational network spread across 14 countries, employing over 43,000 workers worldwide. All limited liability entities under the group were reported to have successfully obtained full Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil certification since August 2023. This compliance extends to processing facilities, where 100% of its integrated palm oil mills hold Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil certification. On the green energy transition aspect, the company targets net zero emissions by 2050, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative in October 2024. The company also invested US$ 60 million to equip 17 of its mills with methane capture infrastructure to reduce carbon emissions. In the upstream sector, the company provides training to over 46,900 independent smallholders, yielding accumulated RSPO credit values exceeding US$ 6.5 million. Educational support is also realised through free schools covering 11 primary schools and 3 secondary schools for over 6,300 workers’ children. This educational assistance continues to the tertiary level through funding academic facilities at Tanri Abeng University, Bogor Agricultural Institute, the University of North Sumatra, and research collaboration with the National University of Singapore.
The positive narrative from this series of green initiatives clashes harshly with the reality of the company’s domestic legal compliance. The company’s involvement in the mega-corruption scandal concerning the provision of Crude Palm Oil export facilities is a dark stain that harmed national economic stability. The Supreme Court issued a cassation ruling punishing the company with an obligation to pay compensation to the state amounting to Rp 4.89 trillion. The process of recovering state losses reached its final stage when the Attorney General’s Office received the remaining compensation payment of Rp 4.2 trillion from Musim Mas Group and other entities on 24 December 2025. The state treasury deposit agenda was witnessed directly by high-ranking state officials, including President Prabowo Subianto and Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa. This trade governance case became a bad precedent after trial facts revealed a bribery scandal that injured the integrity of the judiciary. Law enforcement officials named four judges—Djuyamto, Agam Syarief Baharudin, Ali Muhtarom, and Muhammad Arief Nuryanta—along with a court clerk named Wahyu Gunawan and the company’s legal team as suspects in a bribery case aimed at securing the company’s acquittal at the first instance trial.
The integrity crisis entangling the company’s business operations continues to roll into the realm of cross-border financial reporting. In mid-2026, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa disclosed investigation results indicating the involvement of giant exporter networks, including Musim Mas entities, in financial crimes involving under invoicing and transfer pricing practices for palm oil exports. “Wilmar, Musim Mas. There are several others,” he told reporters at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs on Tuesday (25/6/2026). This manipulation modus operandi is executed by registering palm oil export shipping documents to affiliated companies in Singapore at sharply reduced valuation figures, reaching a difference of up to 50% below the actual global price. This cross-border asset transfer manoeuvre is systematically designed to avoid export duty obligations, conceal the company’s real profit margins, and ultimately create a critical leakage of state foreign exchange revenue.
In the upstream plantation operational area, the company’s environmental stewardship posture was shattered by firm action from regional police. On 18 May 2026, the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Riau Police, led by Senior Commissioner Ade Kuncoro, officially named PT Musim Mas as a suspect in environmental crime. This determination was triggered by the discovery of illegal land clearing and commercial oil palm planting in the buffer zone of the Air Hitam River, Pelalawan Regency. Scientific investigation results revealed that the land in the water catchment area had been planted with oil palm seedlings since the 1997 to 1998 period. This commercial vegetation generated continuous financial profit for the company for approximately 22 years since 2002 without ever obtaining a utilisation permit from the Sumatra III River Basin Authority. This intrusive cultivation practice, which ignored the protective function of the water body, triggered soil structure damage and destroyed the river’s ecological function as a natural erosion control belt.
