Cakung-Cilincing Traffic Engineering Must Be Temporary and Proportionate
Transport analyst Deddy Herlambang believes that traffic engineering remains necessary as a solution to unravel the severe congestion that frequently occurs in the Cakung-Cilincing area. However, he stressed that its implementation must be carried out carefully and should not be permanent. According to Deddy, the engineering must be temporary and adjusted to the density conditions on the ground. This is important so that the policy does not disturb the comfort of other road users. “Traffic engineering still needs to be done. For example, vehicle flow could be made one-way or container loading and unloading activities only permitted at night, for instance starting at 21.00,” said Deddy on Thursday (23/7). One proposed option is regulating vehicle flow to one-way at certain times. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of managing loading and unloading activities and the movement of container trucks so they are not conducted during peak hours when the volume of private and public vehicles is high. Deddy asserted that traffic engineering must be applied proportionately. He reminded that the interests of one group of road users, in this case logistics transport, must not sacrifice the interests of the wider community using the same route. “Traffic engineering remains necessary because it must not disadvantage other road users. Container trucks are not priority vehicles like fire engines or ambulances,” he stressed. Furthermore, he added that this engineering scheme should ideally only be activated when there is a high escalation of density. Thus, the smooth flow of traffic in the industrial and port area can be maintained without continuously burdening public mobility. “Traffic engineering is only temporary in nature, applied when high congestion occurs,” concluded Deddy.
