Deputy Chairman of House Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Syaiful Huda, has said that the proposed construction of a cable car in the Puncak area of Bogor needs to be seriously assessed if it is to function as public transport. In his view, a cable car will not be effective in tackling congestion if it stands alone without being integrated with other transport modes.

Huda said that a cable car can essentially support tourism development in the Puncak area. However, if its main purpose is public transport, mature planning and engineering are required.

“The cable car is roughly in the context of supporting tourist destinations. If the spirit is for transport, there are indeed many things that must be prepared,” Huda told reporters on Tuesday (25/8/2026).

“If the context is to support tourism development, I think it is even a necessity. But if the context is for public transport, it requires quite serious engineering. And all parties must not do things half-heartedly,” he added.

Huda stressed that the cable car must be part of the integration of various public transport modes. According to him, a cable car built in isolation will almost certainly not have a significant impact on congestion problems in Puncak.

“So what is meant by not doing things half-heartedly is that the existence of the cable car must be part of the integration of various public transport modes. If it stands alone, it will almost certainly have no impact. So if the intention is to reduce congestion, it almost certainly cannot work,” Huda said.

“Therefore, it must be integrated as part of other public transport. Starting from bus integration, bus services, integration of services, and other public transport. And to get there, it requires involving many stakeholders,” he said.

Huda also assessed that the regional government cannot work alone in designing the transport system for the Puncak area. He is concerned that development without a complete concept will instead make spatial planning and transport suboptimal.

“I think if it is only the regional government, it is certainly not possible. In fact, it is feared that the spatial planning will end up being wrong later,” he said.

Previously, the Bogor Regency Government revived the discourse on building a cable car in the Puncak tourist area. The cable car is expected to become alternative transport to reduce congestion in Puncak Bogor.

“The plan to build a cable car in the Puncak area is one of the transport development alternatives to improve connectivity while reducing traffic pressure on the Puncak route,” said Bogor Regency Regional Secretary Ajat Rochmat Jatnika on Monday (24/8/2026).

The cable car will later be integrated with electric buses that are being planned for activation on the Pakansari Stadium–Puncak route. It is hoped that people heading to Puncak can choose this transport over private vehicles.

“The cable car concept will later be directed at connecting a number of strategic points in the Puncak area. In this way, the public and tourists will have transport mode options other than private vehicles,” he said.
