The proposal to cut officials’ salaries is not yet final. The government will refine the plan to cut officials’ salaries as part of budget savings due to the escalation of conflict in the Gulf region.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya conveyed that the proposal will still be discussed in meetings over the next few days. He stated that there has been no final government decision regarding the proposal.

“For those concepts, they will be discussed in meetings over the next few days, we’ll see, there has been no decision whatsoever,” said Teddy in Jakarta on Tuesday (17/3).

The proposal to cut officials’ salaries was previously mentioned by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

He alluded to several options for savings amid the conflict in the Gulf region, one of which is reducing the salaries of cabinet members and the DPR.

The escalation of conflict in the Middle East has heated up following the Israeli-US attack on Iran. One effect of the attack is the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, causing global crude oil prices to surge.

Several countries are also implementing fuel savings. One of them is the Philippines, which has adopted a four-day workweek.

Separately, Deputy Minister for State Secretariat Affairs Prasetyo Hadi stated that the government is conducting a more in-depth study regarding the proposal.

“We are detailing the study,” said Prasetyo Hadi at the Ministry of Defence in Jakarta.
