Cabinet Secretary Teddy Inspects People's Economy Train: Fares Drop, Toilet Facilities Excellent
JAKARTA — Cabinet Secretary (Seskab) Teddy Indra Wijaya shared his impressions following an inspection of the Kereta Ekonomi Kerakyatan (People’s Economy Train) service at Pasar Senen Station in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.
He highlighted a substantial reduction in fares as well as properly functioning air-conditioning and toilet facilities aboard the train.
“So we had the Ekonomi Kerakyatan train. Previously, the fare from Jakarta to Yogyakarta was around Rp 225,000-Rp 250,000. Today, I checked directly with the travellers, and the price has dropped quite significantly to between Rp 135,000-175,000,” Teddy said following the afternoon inspection.
The Cabinet Secretary also noted that conditions inside the Ekonomi Kerakyatan train were comfortable. The six-hour travel time from Jakarta to Yogyakarta likewise caught his attention.
“Alhamdulillah, the PT KAI Director General was able to quickly refurbish the carriages, which can now be used from here to Java, to Yogyakarta,” Teddy remarked.
Observing the current satisfactory condition of the Ekonomi Kerakyatan train, Teddy outlined plans for further development. The service will not remain limited to Java; it will be expanded to other Indonesian islands.
“This will be upgraded so that the entire railway system across Indonesia, not only on Java but on other islands as well, will see improvements in quality, comfort, and cleanliness. That is the message from the President,” Teddy added.
At 15:25 WIB, the Cabinet Secretary also oversaw the train’s departure.
PT KAI officially launched the Kereta Ekonomi Kerakyatan on 1 March 2026. The train operates the initial route from Pasar Senen Station to Lempuyangan with designation KA 7040 and was deployed as a transport service for the 2026 Lebaran holiday period.
“This people’s economy train represents part of KAI’s commitment to providing safe, comfortable, and affordable public transport for all segments of society,” explained Jakarta Daop 1 KAI Communications Manager Franoto Wibowo.
The train fare is set at Rp 175,000 following a 30 per cent discount, with departures from Pasar Senen Station at 15:25 WIB and ticket sales available from 11 March to 1 April 2026.
