Cabinet Secretariat: Prabowo sends condolence letter ahead of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral in Mashhad
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has sent a condolence letter as a formal expression of sorrow for the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the US-Israel attack on Iran. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the official letter penned by President Prabowo was addressed to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian ahead of the funeral of Ali Khamenei planned in Mashhad, which is a holy city and the second-largest city in Iran. ‘Ahead of the funeral of the Iranian Supreme Leader, planned in Mashhad, a holy city and Iran’s second-largest city in the near future, President Prabowo Subianto wrote a condolence letter on the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who fell victim to the military attack in early March 2026,’ he said in Jakarta, in the early hours of Thursday. He explained that the official letter containing the deep condolences was handed over directly by Foreign Minister Sugiono to the Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi. In the meeting, FM Sugiono and Ambassador Boroujerdi discussed the escalation of the Middle East situation due to the US and Israel attack on Iran, which triggered Tehran’s retaliatory attacks on several locations in the Persian Gulf. On the same occasion, Sugiono emphasised the importance of respecting international law and the United Nations Charter, and urged diplomatic steps to defuse the escalation. According to information gathered, Ali Khamenei’s body would be buried soon after the unilateral attack by the US and Israel against Iran. The Iranian government has decided that Ali Khamenei will be buried in Mashhad, the same city where his father is buried.
