Cabean River Embankment in Demak Collapses, Flooding Hundreds of Homes
Demak (ANTARA) - The Cabean River B1 embankment located in Guntur District, Demak Regency, Central Java, collapsed after being unable to contain the dramatically increased water volume following heavy rainfall in upstream areas.
"The incident resulted in hundreds of residents' homes being affected by flooding," said the Head of Daily Operations at the Demak Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Agus Sukiyono, in Demak on Monday.
He said heavy rain in upstream areas caused water flow to downstream areas to increase sharply, rendering the embankment unable to withstand the water volume.
"Rain in the upstream area caused water volume in the downstream area to increase with high intensity, resulting in the left side of the Cabean River B1 embankment collapsing," he said.
He explained that the embankment collapse occurred in the early hours of Monday (16 February) at approximately 03:30 local time.
As a result, water overflowed into residential areas and inundated the village road of Tlogoweru, Guntur District. Water levels in residential areas ranged between 5 and 10 centimetres, whilst on roads they reached 10 to 40 centimetres.
In Guntur District, specifically in Tlogoweru Village, the flooding had a significant impact. In Gatak hamlet, some 700 households or approximately 2,100 individuals were affected. Meanwhile, in Weru hamlet, 25 households or 75 individuals were also impacted by the flooding.
In addition to residential areas, a number of public facilities were also affected, including three educational institutions comprising one primary school, one kindergarten, and one Islamic kindergarten, two mosques, one village office, three cemeteries, and one sacred site. Furthermore, approximately 250 hectares of agricultural land were submerged.
Flooding also occurred in Mranggen District, specifically at the Arion housing estate in Kebunbatur Village. Water levels in the area reached 5 to 15 centimetres, though conditions were reported to be gradually receding.
The Demak BPBD together with relevant agencies carried out post-flood mud clearing operations in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, in Kebonagung District, the left-side embankment of the Tuntang River was reported to have collapsed at two points. The collapse caused water to flow into Dempel hamlet in Pilang Wetan Village and Wareng hamlet in Kebonagung Village.
As a result, traffic on the Semarang-Purwodadi route was temporarily paralysed.
The Demak BPBD continues to monitor and manage conditions at affected locations and has urged the public to remain vigilant against the potential for further flooding, given that rainfall remains high in upstream areas.
