C. Kalimantan short on teachers

PALANGKA RAYA, Central Kalimantan: Central Kalimantan is in dire need of 7,125 elementary school teachers, an official at the provincial office of the Ministry of Education and Culture said yesterday.

Andreas Dehen said the need was extremely acute, especially in remote areas.

Antara quoted Andreas as saying that 3,935 homeroom teachers were required, while an additional 1,302 physical education teachers, 856 Islamic religion teachers, 778 Christian religion teachers and 264 Hindu or Buddhist religion teachers were needed.

To overcome the shortage of teachers, the province has adopted a system of rotating visiting teachers and has combined classes when studying certain subjects. (mds)
