C. Java to have new army chief

SEMARANG, Central Java: Brig. Gen. Yusuf Kartanegara,
incumbent chief of the Jakarta military garrison, will replace
Maj. Gen. Soeyono as the local military chief.

Outgoing military chief Soeyono has introduced Yusuf to all
his staff members, as well as academic and community leaders
during a fast breaking dinner he hosted last week.

Soeyono was recently appointed the Armed Forces' chief of
general affairs, replacing Lt. Gen. H.B.L. Mantiri who has
reached retirement age.

Soeyono said Yusuf would be sworn in by Army Chief Gen. R.
Hartono on March 10.

Yusuf, born in Sukabumi, West Java, in 1943, graduated from
the Military Academy in Magelang, Central Java, in 1966.
