C. Java storm damages 39 houses

Thirty-nine houses were damaged in a storm that hit Suruh village in Tasikmadu, Karanganyar regency in Central Java, 25 kilometers east of Surakarta, on Sunday. No casualties were reported in the incident.

By late Monday, there was no report on the financial losses caused by the storm. Officials from Karanganyar regency administration's disaster prevention coordination unit and members of the search and rescue team were still working to clean up debris left by the storm.

According to one resident, Bambang, the storm, which also flattened three poultry farms in the village, followed heavy rain that started at noon.

"At 3 p.m., we suddenly heard the sound of strong wind approaching. It took us all by surprise," he said. (JP/Blontank Poer)
