Bylaw on women trafficking takes effect

MANADO, North Sulawesi: The North Sulawesi Legislative Council enacted on Thursday a bylaw dealing with women trafficking and violence against children.

A.J. Sondakh, the governor of North Sulawesi, in his speech after the bylaw was hammered out, said that it was the first bylaw in Indonesia that banned women trafficking and violence against children.

On the same occasion, Merry Sondakh, the governor's wife, called on parents in North Sulawesi province not to be enticed by job opportunities offered by irresponsible parties to their daughters in other areas.

"Please be aware. Some of those parties recruit women to work as prostitutes," she said. -- JP
