Jakarta (ANTARA) - A Build Your Dream (BYD) Seal electric car was seen emitting thick black smoke accompanied by flames on Jalan Katalis, Kota Bambu Utara, Palmerah, West Jakarta on Tuesday (13/5) at 04.18 local time.
According to the Head of Operations at the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat), Syarifudin, speaking to ANTARA on Tuesday, the incident was caused by a short circuit in the vehicle's battery.
"The car had been parked unused in the house garage for three days when it suddenly began emitting smoke. It is suspected to have been caused by an electrical phenomenon in the electric car's battery," Syarifudin said.
The incident involved not only smoke but also an explosion, according to accounts received at the scene, prompting the owner of the burning electric car to report the matter to the local fire brigade.
"An explosion was heard, and the owner then reported it by calling the Kembangan Sector, which was immediately followed up by officers," he said.
To extinguish the blaze, the fire service had to deploy six fire engine units with 30 personnel.
At the time of reporting, BYD had yet to issue a response regarding the BYD Seal fire in West Jakarta.
